Betapace is used for treating certain types of irregular heartbeat (ventricular arrhythmias). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How to use

Use Betapace as directed by your doctor.

Take Betapace by mouth with or without food. Try to take it the same way (either with food or without food) each time you take your dose. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about taking Betapace with food.
Do not take an antacid that has aluminum or magnesium in it within 2 hours before or after you take Betapace.
Taking Betapace at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
Continue to use Betapace even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Betapace.
Drug Class and Mechanism

Betapace belongs to a group of medicines called beta-Betapace is a beta-blocker. It works by helping the heart beat regularly for a longer period of time.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Betapace and are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Storage

Store Betapace at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep in a tight, light-resistant container. Keep Betapace out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Warning/Precautions

If you are allergic to any ingredient in Betapace (you may check medicine label) then please do not use it without consulting your doctor.

You must also avoid using Betapace if you have certain heart problems (e.g., severe low heart rate, uncontrolled heart failure, certain types of abnormal heartbeat rhythm), low blood potassium or magnesium levels, severe kidney problems, or a history of asthma;
you are taking cisapride, astemizole, terfenadine, mibefradil, dofetilide, or a theophylline (e.g., aminophylline).

Ensure that your doctor is aware of your past and current medical history before you start any new treatment or medication. This must include any and all diseases that you have suffered /suffer from, all subscription and over the counter medication that you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements. This will help avoid a possible interaction or allergy.

Betapace is known to make some people dizzy or drowsy. And if you consume alcoholic beverages, then the chances of this happening increase greatly. Hence, alcohol and alcoholic beverages must be strictly avoided while taking Betapace. If you have experienced drowsiness after taking Betapace, then avoid tasks that require mental alertness for example, driving, handling heavy equipment or machinery etc.

Certain laboratory tests may be made mandatory while you are using Betapace. These tests include heart function, kidney function, and blood pressure and are conducted to analyze your progress to treatment and guage the degree to which side effects are being experienced. You must never miss out on any such lab tests.

Your lab technician or doctor must be informed that you are taking Betapace before you undergo any lab tests or emergency surgical procedures.

New patients who start using blood pressure medication often feel tired, worn out and lethargic during the first few weeks of starting treatment. If you are experiencing this, then do not stop treatment. Instead, contact your doctor but continue to use the medication.

Some blood pressure medications may alter the sodium levels in the body. The risk of this occurring increases severely in patients who have kidney problems, who are ill or who are aged.

So, ensure that you check the sodium content in medications or food items before you consume it.

Muscle weakness, slow or irregular heartbeat are some of the symptoms of high sodium levels.

Situations like heavy sweating due to heat or exercise, vomiting, diarrhea, or other causes of fluid loss can quickly lower your blood pressure to dangerously low levels. So regulate your fluid intake accordingly if you are undertaking any such activity or are suffering from diseases which cause fluid loss.

If you are planning to have a baby or are pregnant already then you must seek advice from your doctor before using Betapace. Discuss the effects and possible risks that Betapace usage may have on the unborn baby.

If you are breast feeding your child, then too seek medical advice before using Betapace. Some drugs may be excreted in the breast milk and may harm the baby.
