Drug Uses

Calan is used to treat chest pain (angina), high blood pressure or irregular heartbeats and it works by blocking the movement of calcium into the muscle cells of the coronary arteries (the arteries supplying the heart) as well as the other arteries of the body. Since calcium is what triggers contraction of muscles, blocking entry of calcium relaxes the arterial muscles. This relaxation allows the arteries to become larger so that more blood can flow through them. Thus, calan is useful in treating and preventing chest pain (angina) resulting from spasm (contraction) of the coronary arteries that reduces the flow of blood to the heart. Relaxing the muscles lining the arteries in the rest of the body lowers blood pressure and thereby reduces the pressure against which the heart must pump blood. As a result, the heart works less and requires less oxygen-carrying blood. This allows the heart to work with the reduced flow of blood caused by coronary artery disease and prevents angina (which occurs whenever the flow of blood to the heart is inadequate). Calan also decreases the conduction of electrical impulses through the heart that control the coordination of contraction. As a result, the rate of contraction slows.

Usage

Medication must always be taken as advised by your medical practitioner/physician. If you are unsure, then please contact your physician for precise instructions. On the other hand, the medicine label usually contains dosage instructions which also may be followed.

A full glass of water when taken with Calan always ensures better absorption.

Medications are prescribed according to a dosage schedule which must be completed in order to reap the benefits of the treatment. Lapsed schedules render Calan ineffective. So, never stop in between unless advised by your physician.

One of the best ways to ensure that you do not miss out on a dose is to maintain a fixed regime for consuming Calan each day.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Calan falls under calcium channel blocker and it works by blocking the movement of calcium into the muscle cells of the coronary arteries (the arteries supplying the heart) as well as the other arteries of the body.

Missed Dose

You must maintain a schedule for taking the medicine at the same time each day so that you do not miss out on any doses. But, in the advent of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember so that you can compensate for the loss of the dose.

But, then you may need to adjust your remaining doses accordingly. And if it is almost time for the next dose, then please skip the missed dose and continue with the normal schedule.

Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.

Storage

Calan must be stored at a cool and dark place that prevents it from direct exposure to sunlight. It should also be protected from kids and pets. You can store it at room temperature.

Warning/Precautions

If you are allergic to any ingredient in Calan (you may check medicine label) then please do not use it without consulting your doctor.

You must also avoid using Calan if you consume alcohol.

Ensure that your doctor is aware of your past and current medical history before you start any new treatment or medication. This must include any and all diseases that you have suffered /suffer from, all subscription and over the counter medication that you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements. This will help avoid a possible interaction or allergy.

In some cases, the medication might be altered or require special attention if you suffer from conditions like allergies (especially drug allergies), heart problems (e.g., heart rhythm disturbances, heart failure), liver or kidney disease, very low blood pressure, muscular dystrophy, brain tumors (cancer).

Your lab technician or doctor must be informed that you are taking Calan before you undergo any lab tests or emergency surgical procedures.

New patients who start using blood pressure medication often feel tired, worn out and lethargic during the first few weeks of starting treatment. If you are experiencing this, then do not stop treatment. Instead, contact your doctor but continue to use the medication.

Some blood pressure medications may alter the sodium levels in the body. The risk of this occurring increases severely in patients who have kidney problems, who are ill or who are aged.

So, ensure that you check the sodium content in medications or food items before you consume it.

Muscle weakness, slow or irregular heartbeat are some of the symptoms of high sodium levels.

Situations like heavy sweating due to heat or exercise, vomiting, diarrhea, or other causes of fluid loss can quickly lower your blood pressure to dangerously low levels. So regulate your fluid intake accordingly if you are undertaking any such activity or are suffering from diseases which cause fluid loss.

If you are planning to have a baby or are pregnant already then you must seek advice from your doctor before using Calan. Discuss the effects and possible risks that Calan usage may have on the unborn baby.

If you are breast feeding your child, then too seek medical advice before using Calan. This drug is known to be excreted in the breast milk and may harm the baby.
