Flonase is prescribed for the treatment of nasal symptoms (both allergic and non allergic) like congestion, sneezing, itching, and runny nose. However, your doctor may also prescribe Flonase for other conditions if found appropriate.

How to use Flonase

The ideal way to use Flonase is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

The inhaler must be primed before you use it for the first time so shake it well for about 5 seconds. Now pump a test spray into the air (away from your face). If the spray is not primed then repeat it one more time.

Now keep the mouthpiece between your lips and ensure that you rest your tongue flat unless your doctor has advised you otherwise. Now press the canister and mouthpiece together as you take a deep breath inside.

Continue to breathe deep as long as you are able to do it comfortably. Breathe out through your nose or your pursed lips. If you are inhaling multiple times, then wait for at least 30 seconds between inhalations.

Preferably, Flonase should be taken at the same time each day to help maintain a regular routine for taking it.

You must not stop taking Flonase without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Flonase is a corticosteroid drug that helps reduce inflammatory reactions in the nasal air passage. It is used to cure allergic symptoms.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Flonase to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.

Store Flonase between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Flonase in the bathroom.

Consult your doctor before using Flonase if you any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Flonase if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure).

You must maintain caution if you are switching from an oral steroid like prednisone to flonase. Because since your body is used to the oral steroid, it will take some time before it produces enough natural steroids to combat conditions like injury, surgery, sudden loss of electrolytes or a sudden asthmatic attack. These situations may have a sudden and severe effect.

If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Flonase as Flonase may harm your fetus.

If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Flonase is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.

Flonase can weaken your immune system so if you have not had chicken pox or measles then ensure that you avoid contact with anybody who has done.

You must inform your doctor or your dentist about Flonase before you undergo treatment or any emergency surgery.

Please maintain caution while using Flonase in children below 4 years of age as the safety as well as effectiveness of Flonase in these patients are yet to be ascertained.
