Ilosone is an antibiotic that is used as a substitute for penicillin in people who are allergic to it. It is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections.
However, your doctor may also prescribe Ilosone for other conditions if found appropriate.
How to use Ilosone
The ideal way to use Ilosone is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.
Ilosone may be taken with a meal to avoid stomach problems.
Ilosone should be swallowed whole taking care that you do not crush or chew it before swallowing it.
Preferably, Ilosone should be taken at the same time each day to help maintain a regular routine for taking it.
You must not stop taking Ilosone without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.
It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Ilosone to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.
On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.
Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.
Store Ilosone between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.
Avoid storing Ilosone in the bathroom.
An Ilosone overdose may have certain adverse symptoms which may require immediate medical attention. So please contact your doctor immediately if you suspect that the patient has overdosed on Ilosone.
Consult your doctor before using Ilosone if you have diarrhea or a stomach or intestinal infection, if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, heart problems, fast or irregular heartbeat, myasthenia gravis, or the blood disorder porphyria, if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.
Do not use Ilosone if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure).
If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Ilosone as Ilosone may harm your fetus.
If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Ilosone is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.
Certain patients experience conditions like stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools while taking Ilosone. If you notice this, then contact your doctor immediately.
Since Ilosone is an antibiotic, it cannot be used to cure viral infections. Also, it is extremely important for you to continue taking the medicine for the full duration of treatment to get rid of the bacteria completely. Patients who leave it midway find it very difficult to treat the bacteria in future as it becomes less sensitive to it.
At the same time, long term usage has been known to lead to a second infection. Inform your doctor promptly if this occurs because your medication may be changed to treat it.
You may be required to undergo certain lab tests including liver function, kidney function, and complete blood cell counts while taking Ilosone. These tests are prescribed to monitor the progress as well as the severity of side effects. Please do not miss any lab appointments.
