Lopressor is prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure and related conditions like angina pectoris. In some cases it is also used to treat aggressive behavior and to prevent migraine headaches.

However, your doctor may also prescribe Lopressor for other conditions if found appropriate.

How to use Lopressor

The ideal way to use Lopressor is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

Lopressor may be taken with a meal or immediately after a meal.

Preferably, Lopressor should be taken at the same time each day to help maintain a regular routine for taking it.

You must not stop taking Lopressor without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Lopressor to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.

Storage

Store Lopressor between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Lopressor in the bathroom.

Overdose

A Lopressor overdose may have certain adverse symptoms like asthma-like symptoms, coma, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, shock, slow heartbeat and stopped heart which may require immediate medical attention. So please contact your doctor immediately if you suspect that the patient has overdosed on Lopressor.

Although there are no reported cases of a Lopressor overdose, you must contact your doctor immediately if you suspect an overdose.

Consult your doctor before using Lopressor if you have conditions like congestive heart failure, asthma, seasonal allergies or liver disease, if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Lopressor if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), you have a very slow heart rate condition (eg, bradycardia, AV block); heart failure controlled by diuretics (eg, furosemide) and digoxin; or very low systolic blood pressure (less than 100 mm Hg); you are taking Mibefradil.

You must avoid taking alcoholic beverages while using Lopressor as it can increase the chances of becoming drowsy, faint or dizzy. Potentially hazardous tasks like driving, handling heavy machinery should also be avoided.

Patients undergoing treatment for high blood pressure often report a feeling of being worn out and tired for the first few weeks of the treatment cycle. If you experience this, then do not stop taking Lopressor suddenly without consulting your doctor.

Do not use a salt substitute or a product with potassium in it without consulting your doctor first.

If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Lopressor as Lopressor may harm your fetus.

If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Lopressor is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.

Do not consume cold medications without consulting your doctor first.

Lopressor may affect your blood sugar level so please monitor your blood sugar under the supervision of your doctor.

You must inform your doctor or your dentist about Lopressor before you undergo treatment or any emergency surgery.

You may be required to undergo certain lab tests including liver and kidney function, blood pressure, and complete blood cell counts, while taking Lopressor. These tests are prescribed to monitor the progress as well as the severity of side effects. Please do not miss any lab appointments.

Please maintain caution while using Lopressor in children as the safety as well as effectiveness of Lopressor in these patients are yet to be ascertained.
