Maxalt is prescribed for the treatment of acute migraine headaches both with and without an aura (flashing lights, wavy lines, dark spots). It cannot be used for preventing migraine headaches or cluster headaches.
However, your doctor may also prescribe Maxalt for other conditions if found appropriate.
How to use Maxalt
The ideal way to use Maxalt is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.
Maxalt should be taken with a full glass of water.
The ideal dosage schedule is 3 doses in a day. You must take the first dose as soon as the symptoms of migraine appear. Follow it up with a second dose (no sooner than 2 hours) only if there is partial relief and the symptoms recur. The maximum dosage in a 24 hour period is 30mgs.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Maxalt is a selective serotonin receptor agonist that works by widening dilated blood vessels in the brain. The headaches which are caused due to these dilated blood vessels get cured.
Since Maxalt is taken only when required (during a migraine headache attack), a missed dose is highly unlikely.
Please keep in mind that taking regular doses will not help prevent a migraine attack.
Store Maxalt between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.
Avoid storing Maxalt in the bathroom.
Do not use Maxalt if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), you are taking ergot alkaloids (e.g., ergotamine) or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (e.g., phenelzine) within the past 14 days; you have taken another serotonin receptor agonist (e.g., sumatriptan) within the last 24 hours; you have a history of chest pain, blood flow or heart conditions, ischemic heart disease, irregular heartbeat, stroke, or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Maxalt as Maxalt may harm your fetus.
If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Maxalt is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.
Maxalt may affect your blood sugar level so please monitor your blood sugar under the supervision of your doctor.
Please maintain caution while using Maxalt in children below 18 years of age as the safety as well as effectiveness of Maxalt in these patients are yet to be ascertained.
Please remember that Maxalt does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV or against an unwanted pregnancy.
