Nizoral is a synthetic and extremely potent antifungal drug that is usually prescribed for treating severe, hard-to-treat fungal skin infections that have not cleared up after treatment with creams or ointments.

Usage

Medication must always be taken as advised by your medical practitioner/physician. If you are unsure, then please contact your physician for precise instructions. On the other hand, the medicine label usually contains dosage instructions which also may be followed. Nizoral comes in tablets to take in orally,or in an over-the-counter shampoo version. Do not take antacid with the tablet.

Nizoral may be taken with a meal to prevent stomach problems.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Nizoral falls under synthetic antifungal drug and it works for topical infections such as athlete's foot, ringworm, candidiasis (yeast infection or thrush), and jock itch.

Missed Dose

You must maintain a schedule for taking the medicine at the same time each day so that you do not miss out on any doses. But, in the advent of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember so that you can compensate for the loss of the dose.

But, then you may need to adjust your remaining doses accordingly. And if it is almost time for the next dose, then please skip the missed dose and continue with the normal schedule.

Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.

Storage

Nizoral must be stored at a cool and dark place that prevents it from direct exposure to sunlight. It should also be protected from kids and pets. You can store it at room temperature at 15–25°C (59–77°F)..

Warning/Precautions

If you are allergic to any ingredient in Nizoral (you may check medicine label) then please do not use it without consulting your doctor.

You must also avoid using Nizoral if you have conditions like you have a fungal infection in the brain membranes (fungal meningitis)
you are taking an aldosterone blocker (eg, eplerenone), astemizole, cisapride, conivaptan, dofetilide, an ergot alkaloid (eg, ergotamine), erythromycin, midazolam, nevirapine, pimozide, a quinazoline (eg, alfuzosin), quinidine, rifabutin, rifampin, terfenadine, triazolam, or a 5-HT receptor agonist (eg, eletriptan)


Ensure that your doctor is aware of your past and current medical history before you start any new treatment or medication. This must include any and all diseases that you have suffered /suffer from, all subscription and over the counter medication that you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements. This will help avoid a possible interaction or allergy.

In some cases, the medication might be altered or require special attention if you suffer from conditions like if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
if you are allergic to other azole antifungals (eg, itraconazole), if you have low stomach acid (eg, hypochlorhydria), if you have a history of liver disease, regular alcohol use, alcohol abuse or dependence, or blood problems (eg, prophyria)

Certain medicines may interact with this drug likemany prescription and nonprescription medicines (eg, used for infections, HIV, seizures, anxiety, sleep, heartburn, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart problems, high blood pressure, allergies, irregular heartbeat, pain, blood thinning, asthma, migraines, mood or mental problems, cancer, prostate problems, immune system suppression, erectile dysfunction, urinary problems, or contraception [birth control]), multivitamin products, and herbal or dietary supplements may interact with Nizoral ,
Nevirapine, rifabutin, or rifampin,
Astemizole, cisapride, dofetilide, erythromycin, pimozide,quinidine, or terfenadine because the risk of severe heart effects may be increased
Midazolam or triazolam because their actions and the risk of their side effects may be increased by Nizoral , resulting in increased risk of sedation and breathing difficulties
Aldosterone blockers (eg, eplerenone), conivaptan, ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), quinazolines (eg, alfuzosin) or 5-HT receptor agonists (eg, eletriptan). Most of these drugs have varying side effects when used with nizoral.

If you are planning to have a baby or are pregnant already then you must seek advice from your doctor before using Nizoral. Discuss the effects and possible risks that Nizoral usage may have on the unborn baby.

If you are breast feeding your child, then too seek medical advice before using Nizoral. Some drugs may be excreted in the breast milk and may harm the baby.
