Phenergan is an antihistamine that helps reduce allergic symptoms like hives and nasal congestion. It is also prescribed for the prevention and treatment of pain and nausea during and after surgery, treating mild pain, prevention of motion sickness etc. Phenergan cannot be used to cure asthma.

However, your doctor may also prescribe Phenergan for other conditions if found appropriate.

How to use Phenergan

The ideal way to use Phenergan is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

Phenergan may be taken with or without a meal to avoid stomach problems.

Phenergan should be swallowed whole taking care that you do not crush or chew it before swallowing it.

If you are planning to use Phenergan for the treatment of motion sickness, then take it at least 30 minutes to one hour prior to starting your journey.

Preferably, Phenergan should be taken at the same time each day to help maintain a regular routine for taking it.

You must not stop taking Phenergan without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Phenergan belongs to a family of drugs called Phenothiazine antihistamines. It works by reducing the incidence of histamine at the sites where they are produced.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Phenergan to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.


Store Phenergan between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Phenergan in the bathroom.

Consult your doctor before using Phenergan if you have nervous system problems, bone marrow depression, heart problems, a blood disease, glaucoma, increased eye pressure, low blood pressure, liver problems, prostate problems, Parkinson disease, seizures, or Reye syndrome, if you regularly consume large amounts of alcohol, if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Phenergan if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), you have severe central nervous system depression or are in a coma, you are also taking astemizole, cisapride, terfenadine, or tramadol.

You must avoid taking alcoholic beverages while using Phenergan as it can increase the chances of becoming drowsy, faint or dizzy. Potentially hazardous tasks like driving, handling heavy machinery should also be avoided.

If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Phenergan as Phenergan may harm your fetus.

If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Phenergan is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.

Phenergan can interact with certain medicines. So, you must inform your doctor if you are taking Charcoal or lithium, Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril), astemizole, cisapride, general anesthetics (eg, thiopental), methyldopa, terfenadine, or tramadol, ACE inhibitors (eg, enalapril), haloperidol, lithium, meperidine, metrizamide, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) (eg, phenelzine), naltrexone, polypeptide antibiotics (eg, actinomycin), or trazodone , Bromocriptine, epinephrine, levodopa, or pergolide.

All these drugs have varying degrees of side effects when combined with Phenergan.

Please maintain caution while using Phenergan in children and elderly patients as the safety as well as effectiveness of Phenergan in these patients are yet to be ascertained.
