Pilocarpine helps in the constriction of the pupils or the miosis and also reduces the pressure within your eye. Open-angle glaucoma causes intense pressure on the eye and Pilocarpine helps reduce it and it also reduces the eye pressure before the surgery for acute angle-closure glaucoma.
Medication must always be taken as advised by your medical practitioner/physician. If you are unsure, then please contact your physician for precise instructions. On the other hand, the medicine label usually contains dosage instructions which also may be followed.
It is advisable to wash your hands thoroughly before you pull the lower eyelid down to form something like a pocket. Gently brace the bottle and tilt your head backwards and squeeze the eyes as soon as possible. Gently close your eyes for a minute or two. Avoid rinsing the dropper. But try and wait for sometime before you take the second dosage. It is advisable that the drop should atleast be taken in 1 to 2 drops and that too for 6 times in an entire day. If you have had a severe attack, then tell the doctor who will tell you to put the drops on the unaffected eye as well.
Medications are prescribed according to a dosage schedule which must be completed in order to reap the benefits of the treatment. Lapsed schedules render Pilocarpine ineffective. So, never stop in between unless advised by your physician.
One of the best ways to ensure that you do not miss out on a dose is to maintain a fixed regime for consuming Pilocarpine each day.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Pilocarpine which acts on a subtype of M3 or muscarinic receptor (M3) is found on the iris sphincter muscle. This causes the muscle to contract as well as produce miosis. This further seeks to open the trabecular meshwork during an increased tension on the scleral spur. This action helps in facilitating the rate that aqueous humor leaves the eye so as to decrease the intraocular pressure.
You must maintain a schedule for taking the medicine at the same time each day so that you do not miss out on any doses. But, in the advent of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember so that you can compensate for the loss of the dose.
But, then you may need to adjust your remaining doses accordingly. And if it is almost time for the next dose, then please skip the missed dose and continue with the normal schedule.
Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.
Pilocarpine must be stored at a cool and dark place that prevents it from direct exposure to sunlight. It should also be protected from kids and pets. You can store it at room temperature preferably between 20 to 25 degrees C.
If you are allergic to any ingredient in Pilocarpine (you may check medicine label) then please do not use it without consulting your doctor.
