Revia is useful in the treatment of alcoholism and also narcotic or opioid addiction especially in adults. It can also be used for a number of other conditions as and when prescribed by your medical practitioner.
Medication must always be taken as advised by your medical practitioner/physician. If you are unsure, then please contact your physician for precise instructions. On the other hand, the medicine label usually contains dosage instructions which also may be followed.
Revia may be taken with a meal or without a meal to prevent stomach problems.
A full glass of water when taken with Revia always ensures better absorption.
Medications are prescribed according to a dosage schedule which must be completed in order to reap the benefits of the treatment. Lapsed schedules render Revia ineffective. So, never stop in between unless advised by your physician. But it is advisable that Revia should not be taken if you are suffering from any acute kidney or liver problems.
One of the best ways to ensure that you do not miss out on a dose is to maintain a fixed regime for consuming Revia each day.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Revia being a narcotic antagonist blocks the effects of injectable opioids like heroin and narcotic pain relievers. A regular use of Revia has also been responsible for a considerable decrease in alcoholic consumption of its patients.
You must maintain a schedule for taking the medicine at the same time each day so that you do not miss out on any doses. But, in the advent of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember so that you can compensate for the loss of the dose.
But, then you may need to adjust your remaining doses accordingly. And if it is almost time for the next dose, then please skip the missed dose and continue with the normal schedule.
Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.
Revia must be stored at a cool and dark place that prevents it from direct exposure to sunlight. It should also be protected from kids and pets. You can store it at room temperature preferably at 25 degrees C.
If you are allergic to any ingredient in Revia (you may check medicine label) then please do not use it without consulting your doctor.
You must also avoid using Revia if you have conditions like hepatitis, liver disease, or are into arcotic medications for pain, or are into narcotics and are experiencing certain withdrawal symptoms from the narcotics, also have failed the challenge test with Revia, and finally have tested positive for narcotics.
Avoid the use of narcotics along with your medication of Revia. It may lead to life threatening problems as well.
Ensure that your doctor is aware of your past and current medical history before you start any new treatment or medication. This must include any and all diseases that you have suffered /suffer from, all subscription and over the counter medication that you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements. This will help avoid a possible interaction or allergy.
Revia is known to make some people dizzy or drowsy. And if you consume alcoholic beverages, then the chances of this happening increase greatly. Hence, alcohol and alcoholic beverages must be strictly avoided while taking Revia. If you have experienced drowsiness after taking Revia, then avoid tasks that require mental alertness for example, driving, handling heavy equipment or machinery etc.
Certain laboratory tests may be made mandatory while you are using Revia. These tests include liver tests and are conducted to analyze your progress to treatment and gauge the degree to which side effects are being experienced. You must never miss out on any such lab tests.
Your lab technician or doctor must be informed that you are taking Revia before you undergo any lab tests or emergency surgical procedures.
If you are planning to have a baby or are pregnant already then you must seek advice from your doctor before using Revia. Discuss the effects and possible risks that Revia usage may have on the unborn baby.
If you are breast feeding your child, then too seek medical advice before using Revia. Some drugs may be excreted in the breast milk and may harm the baby.
